A stalled website became a different way to build.
A previous vendor had begun the WordPress site, but the client was left without a complete, usable handoff. They had invested in a website they could neither launch nor control.
The immediate job was rescue. The larger opportunity was to return with something more coherent, more durable, and more truly theirs than the project that had stalled.
AI became the studio.
I used AI throughout the production loop: recovering and organizing source material, developing the copy, exploring the visual direction, refining the design, and implementing the site.
This was not a chain of isolated prompts. I set the goals, constraints, taste, and standard for acceptance; AI made it possible to move repeatedly between words, visuals, and code while they were still informing one another. The site could be designed as a whole instead of assembled through another series of handoffs.
The handoff became part of the architecture.
A finished site that the client could not safely change would repeat the original problem. But giving the client unrestricted control of the layout would put the new design at risk.
Under my direction, AI wrote a site-specific WordPress plugin. The theme remains responsible for layout and visual behavior. The plugin exposes selected content through familiar WordPress controls, letting the client change what should change without accidentally redesigning the site.
Better than salvage.
The project did not have to inherit the unfinished site’s assumptions. Its surviving material became evidence: something to understand, preserve where useful, and then rebuild into a more intentional public experience.
Custom WordPress plugins are not a new invention. What is different here is the production model around familiar technology: one AI-directed process spanning recovery, writing, design, theme development, plugin engineering, and the eventual owner handoff.
The AI is in the method, not the marketing.
Visitors do not need to encounter an AI feature for AI to have transformed the result. Its value here is the range and coherence of work one person can direct—from a compromised starting point to a designed, editable software product.
The first controlled owner-editing slice is implemented locally. Extending that model across the site and proving that client-owned content survives a live redeployment are the next steps.
